The adrenal or ‘stress glands’ are small, triangular shaped glands located on the top of the kidneys. Their function is to prepare the body’s resources to run or fight through the releasing of specific hormones. Our bodies, however, automatically respond the same way when we are under physical, emotional or mental stress. Many of us live in a state of constant stress that strains our bodies to the point of exhaustion. Over time, and through repetition, this can impact the way the adrenal glands function, causing us to experience adrenal insufficiency or ‘burn-out’.

If you think about it, our adrenal glands can be likened to the batteries in a flashlight. They are filled with a charge that is used to run the body and give us that extra edge in times of need. Each time we use our flashlight, we drain some of the charge from our batteries. Fortunately for us, our batteries are automatically recharged when we eat healthy and get lots of rest. If, on the other hand, we use our flashlight all of the time, and don’t recharge our batteries regularly, it is only a matter of time before the light starts to dim and eventually goes out all together.

Technically speaking, adrenal insufficiency refers to the inability of adrenal glands to produce the proper quantity of hormones needed to run the body. It should not to be confused with Addison’s disease, which is when the adrenal glands fail to produce hormones or shutdown completely. The most common symptom of adrenal insufficiency is fatigue. Other symptoms include: not feeling rested after sleep, inability to deal with life stressors, poor memory, a low sex drive, frequent infections due to a suppressed immune system, inability to concentrate, depression, mood swings, irritability, weight gain, weakness and hormonal imbalances.

There are a number of reasons why people experience adrenal insufficiency. It can be from a genetic or congenital abnormality, but the most common one is stress. Some of us force our bodies to run or fight all the time. Life challenges, financial pressures, relationship issues and unresolved emotional concerns will eventually deplete your adrenal glands. Internal stresses such as allergies, physical disease, nutritional deficiencies, food and environmental toxins can also put pressure on the body’s natural reserves. In addition, stimulants, such as sugar, white flower, caffeine, as well as constant exposure to loud music, loud noise or EM radiation can take a toll on our adrenal glands.

Recommendations For Wellness

First and foremost, stop forcing yourself to keep going and start listening to your body. It will tell you what it needs. If it is tired, try closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths. Taking a break, even a short one is a great way to let your body rest.

Just let it go. Allow your body to let go of any resentment, blame, guilt, worries or fears that can paralyze the adrenal glands.

Learning relaxation techniques such as biofeedback, meditation guided imagery can help you cope with stress better.

Your adrenal glands are two tiny pyramid-shaped pieces of tissue situated right above each kidney. Their job is to produce and release, when appropriate, certain regulatory hormones and chemical messengers.

Adrenaline is manufactured in the interior of the adrenal gland, called the adrenal medulla. adrenal nutritionCortisol, the other chemical from the adrenal gland, is made in the exterior portion of the gland, called the adrenal cortex. The cortex also secretes androgens, estrogens, and progestins. Cortisol, commonly called hydrocortisone, is the most abundant — and one of the most important — of many adrenal cortex hormones. Cortisol helps you handle longer-term stress situations.

In addition to helping you handle stress, these two primary adrenal hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, along with others similarly produced, help control body fluid balance, blood pressure, blood sugar, and other central metabolic functions.

In the heightened nervous state of adrenal burnout, the body overproduces adrenaline, cortisol and other stress hormones. Constant stress and poor nutrition can weaken the adrenal glands. Eventually, this causes the adrenal glands, the front line in the stress reaction, to show wear and tear and become depleted. This frequently leads to impairment in the thyroid gland, which can cause a further decline in energy level and mood and is one of the reasons why many people have thyroid glands that don’t work well.

 

When stress continues over prolonged periods of time, the adrenal glands can deplete the body’s hormonal and energy reserves, and the glands may either shrink in size or hypertrophy (enlarge). The overproduction of adrenal hormones caused by prolonged stress can weaken the immune system and inhibit the production of white blood cells that protect the body against foreign invaders (in particular lymphocytes and lymph node function).

Adrenal dysfunction can disrupt the body’s blood sugar metabolism, causing weakness, fatigue, and a feeling of being run down. It can also interfere with normal sleep rhythms and produce a wakeful, unrelaxing sleep state, making a person feel worn out even after a full night’s sleep.

In order to determine the health of your adrenal glands you need to have a simple blood, urine, or saliva test such as the Adrenal Stress Index performed by your practitioner. Cortisol levels can be checked throughout the day by saliva or in the am by blood. DHEA, and Epinephrine, are some other indicators of adrenal function. The information provided by testing can help to determine the most appropriate type of treatment.

Treatment

Lifestyle changes such as:
Eating steadily, all day long. Skipping meals is one of the worst things you can do for your body. When you’re hungry, your blood sugar drops, stressing your adrenal glands and triggering your sympathetic nervous system. That causes light-headedness, cravings, anxiety and fatigue. Another drawback to skipping meals: The resulting low blood sugar can affect your ability to think clearly and shorten your attention span.

Skipping breakfast is particularly bad, as it is a sure fire way to gain, not lose, weight. If you start each morning with a good breakfast and “graze” healthfully every two to four hours, your blood sugar will remain steady throughout the day. You’ll feel more rested and energetic. Eat protein with every meal. Eat Complex carbohydrates such as brown rice. Avoid sugar, junk food, white pasta, white rice, white bread.

Absolutely NO Caffeine. Coffee/Sodas over stimulates your adrenals and they deplete important B vitamins.

Coffee does not give you energy; coffee gives you the illusion of energy. Coffee actually drains the body of energy and makes you more tired, because of vitamin and adrenal depletion.

Exercise to relax. Walking, Yoga, deep breathing, meditation, or stretching. No vigorous or aerobic exercise, which depletes the adrenals.

Avoid alcohol, processed foods, and tobacco. Nicotine in tobacco initially raises cortisol levels, but chronic use results in low DHEA, testosterone, and progesterone levels.

Reduce stress; learn relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, visualization, progressive muscle relaxation.

Helpful Supplements
The use of small amounts of natural adrenal hormone (hydrocortisone) to bring slightly low adrenal function up to its proper normal daily range is often helpful.
Take a daily multivitamin to provide nutritional support to the adrenal gland.
Vitamin C 1,000-3,000 mg a day
L-Theanine 100-400 mg a day Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) 300 mg a day
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), no more than 1000 mg of glycyrrhizin

Adrenal Failure

Adrenal Failure Facts

 

I was a psychotherapist for years before I got involved in the holistic movements….before I became a shaman. I had a strong interest in psychosomatic problems. The popular approach at that time, which is still common, was that many body problems, pains, etc., were all in the head. That there was no actual medical basis for many human problems. I also accepted that as a fact, and saw many clients trying to resolve their mentalAdrenal Failure,adrenal diseaseemotional issues so they would no longer have these false medical complaints, or painful symptoms. Many were helped to live better lives with the therapy….but that is not the point of this article.

To make a very long story much shorter, let me just say that a range of personal experiences followed by years of personal research led me to become an expert in psycho-physiology. Where psycho-somatics assumed that ‘ it is all in your head ‘, psycho-physiology assumes that there is something actually going on in the body causing the symptoms. Then my research  experience took me one step further. I began to realize that many problems were actually comming from the environment, effecting both the mind and the body!

This issue is very complex, I could write books about it, but these tidbits will stay focused on some common adrenal issues, so if you are suffering with a whole range of symptoms…I can clearly state that [ it's not all in your head ].

First of all, we are not a closed system yes there is a skin around us but we are really an energy system, and energy around us does get inside us.

Some of this environmental energy helps us, and some hurts us ,the environment is a mixed bag, a melting pot of many things.
The adrenal glands try to handle all stress,  it doesn’t matter if that stress is caused by our own internal process or environmental factors.

Among other things, the adrenals work on the [ fight or flight approach ]. That means when they are dealing with a stressor, they will try to get you to resolve the cause of it by fighting with you inside or fighting with something in the environment. Let’s say that your fighting with your boss at work not knowing quite why,  the adrenals know why, they are causing the fight so you will address with your boss the real issues causing the stress. If that doesn’t resolve things the adrenals kick in the [ flight ] approach, telling you to [get away from here before you get too damaged]. The adrenals are trying to protect you [ that is their job ] by getting you to quit and find another job.

However, like most body processes, the adrenal live and work in that part of you called the [ unconscious ]. That means that you don’t always know what they are trying to resolve. However, there is always a real issue causing damage to you when they become active…. this is the basis for psycho-physiology! The pain and damage is real….not in your head!!!
Once these glands are reacting to something, they don’t stop untiil the issue gets resolved. Since you often don’t realize what the issue is, often things don’t get resolved. So the glands get weaker [ from over use ], over time they become exhausted and can even stop functioning in total failure [ DEATH ].

Other body gland will often try to take over the adrenal’s job…..they too can become exhausted. The phrase [burn out ] is referring to this actual exhaustion of these glands…..it’s not all in your head.

You can die, or develop many stress related conditions……or be open to many environmental toxins or infections when the mind-body is weakened by burn out…..the immune system is burnt.

You have a few choices in how to handle this situation, most often people use [ coping tools ]. Some of these tools cause further damage, drugs, Adrenal Failure,adrenal systemsmoking etc. Some help,  like taking high doses of B Vitamins.

However, I always suggest that you actually resolve the cause of the stress, rather then just cope with it. In future Tidbits and Newsletters I will be taking this further, and offering you many approaches to [ coping ] and stress resolution!

Adrenal Fatigue Test for Adrenal Glands

Stress is the number one cause of adrenal fatigue; however, many individuals may have this condition but not realize they have a problem or that there is something that can be done about it.

Anyone that is overworked has mental or physical stress, marital problems, or a slew of other issues should pay attention to their body in order to detect symptoms of adrenal fatigue.

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue include nervousness, weakness, irritability, low body temperature, low blood pressure, apprehension, excessive hunger, difficulty gaining weight, indigestion, craving for sweets, inability to concentrate, feelings of frustration, lack of energy, mental depression, moments of confusion, poor memory, unexplained hair loss, inflammation, lightheadedness, heart fluttering, insomnia, headaches, dizziness that occurs upon standing, poor resistance to infections, alternating diarrhea and constipation, to name a few.

Over time. Some people are more susceptible to stress related illnesses than others. If the stress level in a person’s life stays constant, the body begins to work harder to fight off the stress by secreting hormones that increase the blood sugar levels to ensure the body has enough energy. Excess stress hormones put a strain on the body’s cardiovascular system, causes weight gain around the middle, and increases blood sugar and blood pressure.

Adrenal fatigue occurs when the body can no longer cope with the stress. Inside the body, the adrenal hormones that have been pumping at high levels now drop to very low levels. Once in this stage the body can no longer tolerate stress of any kind, mental and physical exhaustion occur and can lead to illness and collapse.

So how can you know if this is starting to happen to you?
There are some self-examinations and painless lab tests that can help you learn if you have adrenal fatigue.

The Adrenal Fatigue Test is a urine and saliva test you can collect at home and send to a lab.

It measures adrenaline, cortisol, DHEA, and Norepinephrine.

The easiest self-exam is done by pressing on the adrenal glands that are located above the kidneys. If you feel pain, then you more than likely have adrenal fatigue.

The Ragland’s sign or blood pressure test is another easy test to take at home. You will need a blood pressure kit. Take your blood pressure while sitting, then stand up and take your blood pressure again. The top number, (systolic) should have gone up by 8 to 10 mm. If this number dropped instead of rising, you more than likely have adrenal fatigue.

The last self-exam you can do at home is the pupil dilation exam. You can do this exam by standing in the bathroom facing the mirror. While looking into the mirror, shine a flashlight into one eye. The eye should contract, if the pupil stays the same or dilates; this is another sign of adrenal fatigue.

This syndrome is also accompanied by an under active thyroid gland, slow sexual development and loss of pigmentation on areas of the skin.

Adrenal Insufficiency – Symptoms

The people suffering from adrenal insufficiency usually display the following symptoms:

  • The blood pressure of the people suffering from adrenal insufficiency is usually low and drops further to the extend of 105/60 on standing. On reclining, the blood pressure can become as high as 130/80. This variation in blood pressure makes it difficult for the individuals to fall asleep and can also cause other conditions like temporary darkening of the vision, dizziness, faintness and fainting.
  • Individuals display lymph gland inflammation of the neck that is there is swelling, pain or tenderness in the lymph glands.

  • There is very scanty perspiration in people suffering from adrenal insufficiency except under the arms, hands and feet. Further, the urine and the sweat will be saltier than normal people and there will be a greater concentration of salt on the skin.
  • These people feel pain and tenderness over the adrenal area of mid back when a little pressure is applied. This condition is known as the Rogoff’s sign.

Peppermint Oil – Peppermint has a broad range of healthful properties, and is thought of as an uplifting aroma. Peppermint, like Cedar, can be used for gentle stimulation and alertness.

Citrus Oils – Essential oils pressed from the rinds of citrus fruit like sweet orange, bitter orange (bergamot), lemon and lime are also uplifting and brightening, yet have a relaxing quality as well. They are useful additions to fatigue-busting blends, as the added calming, but not sedating, quality can lower stress levels, which are generally the cause of adrenal fatigue in the first place.

Aromatherapy Blends for Adrenal Fatigue

First, a blend to provide pure regenerative support without stimulation. This blend is suitable for regular use, and some users report almost immediate results – it has been noted to reduce or eliminate that nauseous feeling that can accompany insomnia. FOR A ONE OUNCE BLEND – add 1.5ml Spruce or Black Spruce and 1.5ml Pine Needle essential oils to one ounce (30ml) of your favorite carrier oil (Hazelnut is commonly used, but any common aromatherapy carrier oil should do the trick). Apply regularly to the kidney / adrenal area. Note: 1ml is about 25 drops.

To use these oils in a gently stimulating, all-over body blend, add 3ml each of Spruce and Pine essential oils, 2ml Atlas Cedar oil and 2ml of your favorite citrus oil to 4oz of carrier oil. Apply this all over after a morning shower – though if using the citrus oil, do not apply to areas that will be exposed to the sun in the following 72 hours, as citrus oils are photosensitizing.

If you prefer the properties and aroma of peppermint, try the following blend: 6ml of Spruce or Black Spruce, 2.5ml Atlas Cedar and 1.5ml Peppermint in 4 ounces of your favorite carrier. This blend will not be photosensitizing to the skin, and can be used all over the body.

These wonderful smelling aromatherapy blends can offer support in cases of mild and moderate adrenal fatigue for many people, though the underlying causes of this condition should be addressed concurrently for best results. Chronic fatigue is a serious medical condition that affects thousands of people all around the world. The exact cause of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is unknown, although many experts argue about the exact causes.

The adrenal gland is a gland within the body that is responsible for secreting hormones into the bloodstream. The adrenal gland is in control of cortisone and dhea.

These hormones control a wide variety of different systems within the body, these include the immune system, energy, and stress.

Chronic adrenal fatigue syndrome often causes the adrenal gland to become overworked, and so levels of these hormones are depleted. This can affect the body’s natural hormone balance.

 

There is a complicated system known as the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA). If you paid attention in your biology classes then some of those names may already be familiar with you. Basically, all of these are different gland and these glands affect one another. If one of the glands is not functioning correctly then the others will also start to function incorrectly.

In many chronic fatigue sufferers there is a problem that affects the hypothalamus. It’s not clear why the HPA axis is affected in patients.


There are some things that you can do to relieve the symptoms caused by the overworking of the adrenal gland. Pantothenic acid is another product which can help to relieve the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome.

How does stress cause high cortisol?
The HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis is the neurohormonal regulator of the stress response. The limbic system of the brain triggers the hypothalamus to secrete CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone) in response to a physical, emotional, or environmental stressor.

The CRH then triggers the pituitary gland to secrete ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), which activates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol which is then released into the bloodstream.

When cortisol blood levels become high, the HPA axis feedback mechanism turns off the corticotropin-releasing hormone which tells the brain and adrenal glands to cut down on cortisol excretion.

Continued stress overrides this feedback system leading to continued production of cortisol. You become stuck in alarm mode or ‘fight or flight’. If our exposure to stress is only for brief periods, and we have a balance in our life between work and play, get adequate rest, and have good nutrition, then occasional stress accompanied by elevated cortisol will not be a problem. Yet if the stress becomes chronic with inadequate nutrition, rest, relaxation and sleep, then we begin to experience chronic excessive cortisol levels.

What Does Cortisol Do?
Some cortisol is essential for life. Cortisol is necessary for normal brain, immune, muscle, blood sugar function, and blood circulation. In the beginning stages of adrenal fatigue cortisol levels are elevated. As the stress continues and the adrenal glands further deteriorate cortisol levels begin to decline. Having too little cortisol contributes to a new set of problems. Serious cortisol deficiency such as Addison’s disease, is a potentially fatal illness.

The Consequences of High Cortisol
Too much cortisol causes: Abdominal obesity High blood sugar (‘adrenal diabetes’) muscle wasting Bone loss Immune shutdown Brain (hippocampus) atrophy Poor wound healing Thin wrinkled skin Fluid retention Hypertension
Excessive cortisol frequently causes increased: Fatigue/decreased energy Irritability Impaired memory Depressed mood, decreased libido Insomnia anxiety Impaired concentration Crying Restlessness Social withdrawal Feelings of hopelessness

Chronically high cortisol may contribute to many diseases, including cancer, ulcers, heart attacks, diabetes, infections, alcoholism, strokes, skin diseases, psychosis, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, and possibly Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease . High Cortisol may contribute to obesity not only because of the metabolic disruptions (including insulin resistance) that it promotes, but also because it induces ‘stress overeating,’ especially in women.

Is There A Test?
Yes! An Adrenal Stress Index is a simple saliva test that can determine if your cortisol levels are too high or too low. This consists collecting your saliva collection at four times during the day which determines a diurnal cortisol rhythm. The quicker high cortisol levels or adrenal fatigue is discovered the better your chances are for recovery without more serious health consequences.

Ways to Reduce Adrenal Gland Stress:

1. Use cortisol reducing supplement: There are a variety of herbs to reduce cortisol at peak times. Some of my favorites include: Seriphos, and Calm-PRT.
2. Eat at regular intervals throughout the day: Avoid skipping meals, as this will create a cortisol release.
3. Excessive carbohydrate intake creates cortisol release in response to constantly elevated insulin levels. Eat complex carbohydrates instead.
4. Utilize stress reduction techniques at peak cortisol times: meditation, self-hypnosis, or simply lying on the floor doing belly breathing for 10-15 minutes can work wonders at reducing stress and thus cortisol levels.
5. Get to bed on time. Get at least 8 hours of sleep nightly.
6. Avoid stimulants: Stay away from energy drinks that contain ephedra-like compounds and caffeine. Stimulants shift the body into sympathetic dominance, or “fight or flight”. Stimulants can also disrupt your sleeping patterns. If you must drink coffee, be sure that you do not drink any after 12 noon.
7. Keep your workouts under 1 hour: At the 1 hour mark, your testosterone levels begin to decline and cortisol levels rise. Forty-five minute workouts are even better.

While there are many different methods for stress management, not all of them will work for everybody. One of the keys to stress management is finding an effective personal tool for fighting stress. Stress management is of ever increasing importance in the world today. Stress can be a direct result of deadlines or urgency created by circumstances surrounding us. While this may sound simple enough, not everyone has the ability to laugh their stress away, nor can anyone, laugh at stress all the time. Finding an effective means of stress management is important for physical well-being. Stress is known to advance heart problems, headaches and prevent the body from healing itself effectively. An effective program for stress management is scientifically proven to keep people healthier for longer periods of time.

Many people own pets to help them relieve stress. Aquariums have been known to lower blood pressure and help in stress management while being low maintenance and easy to take care of. While this solution for stress management may not work for everyone, it is at least, one option.

Whether stress management is accomplished through a creative outlet like running or other personal hobbies, owning pets, or other means of vigorous physical effort which will lower the adrenal production to help reduce stress and stress levels in life, stress management is an important factor to consider. Stress management is not only an urgent need in today’s fast-paced lifestyle, but an important factor in both physical and mental health.

Your adrenal glands are two tiny pyramid-shaped pieces of tissue situated right above each kidney. Their job is to produce and release, when appropriate, certain regulatory hormones and chemical messengers.

Adrenaline is manufactured in the interior of the adrenal gland, called the adrenal medulla. Cortisol, the other chemical from the adrenal gland, is made in the exterior portion of the gland, called the adrenal cortex. The cortex also secretes androgens, estrogens, and progestins. Cortisol, commonly called hydrocortisone, is the most abundant — and one of the most important — of many adrenal cortex hormones. Cortisol helps you handle longer-term stress situations.

In addition to helping you handle stress, these two primary adrenal hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, along with others similarly produced, help control body fluid balance, blood pressure, blood sugar, and other central metabolic functions.

In the heightened nervous state of adrenal burnout, the body overproduces adrenaline, cortisol and other stress hormones. Constant stress and poor nutrition can weaken the adrenal glands. Eventually, this causes the adrenal glands, the front line in the stress reaction, to show wear and tear and become depleted. This frequently leads to impairment in the thyroid gland, which can cause a further decline in energy level and mood and is one of the reasons why many people have thyroid glands that don’t work well.

When stress continues over prolonged periods of time, the adrenal glands can deplete the body’s hormonal and energy reserves, and the glands may either shrink in size or hypertrophy (enlarge). The overproduction of adrenal hormones caused by prolonged stress can weaken the immune system and inhibit the production of white blood cells that protect the body against foreign invaders (in particular lymphocytes and lymph node function).

Adrenal dysfunction can disrupt the body’s blood sugar metabolism, causing weakness, fatigue, and a feeling of being run down. It can also interfere with normal sleep rhythms and produce a wakeful, unrelaxing sleep state, making a person feel worn out even after a full night’s sleep.

Testing for Adrenal Health

In order to determine the health of your adrenal glands you need to have a simple blood, urine, or saliva test performed by your practitioner. Cortisol levels can be checked by blood or throughout the day by a saliva test. DHEA, and Epinephrine, are some other indicators of adrenal function.

Treatment

Lifestyle changes such as:

Eating steadily, all day long. Skipping meals is one of the worst things you can do for your body. When you’re hungry, your blood sugar drops, stressing your adrenal glands and triggering your sympathetic nervous system. That causes light-headedness, cravings, anxiety and fatigue. Another drawback to skipping meals: The resulting low blood sugar can affect your ability to think clearly and shorten your attention span.

Skipping breakfast is particularly bad, as it is a sure fire way to gain, not lose, weight. If you start each morning with a good breakfast and “graze” healthfully every two to four hours, your blood sugar will remain steady throughout the day. You’ll feel more rested and energetic.

Eat protein with every meal. Eat Complex carbohydrates such as brown rice. Avoid sugar, junk food, white pasta, white rice, white bread.

Absolutely NO Caffeine. Coffee/Sodas over stimulates your adrenals and they deplete important B vitamins.
Coffee does not give you energy; coffee gives you the illusion of energy. Coffee actually drains the body of energy and makes you more tired, because of vitamin and adrenal depletion.

Exercise to relax. Walking, Yoga, deep breathing, meditation, or stretching. No vigorous or aerobic exercise, which depletes the adrenals.

Avoid alcohol, processed foods, and tobacco. Nicotine in tobacco initially raises cortisol levels, but chronic use results in low DHEA, testosterone, and progesterone levels.

Reduce stress; learn relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, visualization, progressive muscle relaxation.

Helpful Supplements
The use of small amounts of natural adrenal hormone (hydrocortisone) to bring slightly low adrenal function up to its proper normal daily range is often helpful.
Take a daily multivitamin to provide nutritional support to the adrenal gland.
Vitamin C 1,000-3,000 mg a day
L-Theanine 100-400 mg a day
Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) 300 mg a day
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), no more than 1000 mg of glycyrrhizin

Always Tired – It Could Be Adrenal Exhaustion


 
The most common complaint I hear is that people always feel tired. In fact, most people seem to think feeling tired all the time is just a normal part of modern life. I have good news. It’s not!

There are many causes of chronic tiredness. Sometimes it’s obvious, like not getting enough Adrenal Exhaustionsleep, but other times it can be due to an underlying health issue. Chronic tiredness can be a frustrating condition. There usually isn’t a simple solution to it and any medical tests are likely to come back ‘normal’.

In this article I’m going to explore the common condition of adrenal exhaustion and how it can cause chronic tiredness.

Common symptoms and risk factors of adrenal exhaustion include:

You feel tired and unrefreshed after waking in the morning
You find it difficult to get going in the morning until you have had a cup of coffee
You feel tired after exercising
You began to feel chronically tired after a stressful event had occurred
You experience chronic allergies, inflammation or digestive problems
You have a high-stress, always on-the-go lifestyle. You work hard, party hard, stay up late, drink coffee and alcohol, sometimes burn the candle at both ends, but lately you’ve found you just can’t do this anymore.

The adrenals are two small glands located above each kidney. One of their roles is to secrete the stress hormones cortisol, adrenalin and nor-adrenalin. These hormones are secreted during stressful situations – either to help us calm down (cortisol) or to prepare us for battle (adrenalin and nor-adrenalin).

During chronic stress, the adrenals continually secrete these hormones and over time can become exhausted (just like the pancreas becomes exhausted pumping out insulin in response to a high sugar diet). At the beginning stages of stress, the adrenal glands pump out more cortisol to keep up with the demands being placed on your body. At this point you may find yourself feeling alert and ‘on the ball’. However over time the adrenals become exhausted, causing a decline in the amount of cortisol that they are able to pump out. If and when you reach this stage of adrenal dysfunction, a number of detrimental effects may occur including chronic tiredness (see list of symptoms above).

Our adrenals need to be cared for and supported with a healthy diet and nutrients. Certain herbal medicine, amino acids, supplements and stress-reducing lifestyle practices can help to repair exhausted adrenal glands. But remember – it’s always easier to prevent something going wrong than to fix it after its broken. When the adrenal glands become very exhausted, you can experience burnout and possibly chronic fatigue syndrome.
